Are You Exhausted Too?

a couple sits in a coffee shop exhausted by the headlines in the newspaper.

The chaos feels endless, and trying to keep track of it all is exhausting.

I find myself with writer’s block given the events of the past few weeks. Actually since the election in 2024. I find sometimes when things are felt on such a deep level it is hard to reach in and put words to them. So I am meandering. Just random thoughts from the perspective of a mom, a woman, and a citizen. An ordinary person trying to make a life.

If we ever wondered what it is to be in a brain that is in decline, the world is experiencing it now. The chaos that is being unleashed into the world is just too much. Epstein files of worldwide trafficking, Iranian families bombed without warning, Venezuelan families caught in regime change, and now Ecuadorian families waking to find out they are the latest under fire. I hear Cuba is next.

I am not talking about the men thirsty for power but ordinary people like me and you trying to have a life, caught up in circumstances beyond our control. A feeling I think many of us are experiencing ourselves.

I think of sovereignty. The sovereignty of nations, personal beliefs and choices. From the largest of definitions to the most personal is all being violated in one way or another.

The Speaker of the House, our second in succession after the Vice President says it’s not Congress’s business to be involved in the war. Texas voters experienced blatant election interference but it’s not our party, it’s not our state. Women lose more rights to their bodies in Tennessee but it isn’t my business what happens in Tennessee. If it’s not the Speaker’s, not the courts, and not the citizenry’s, then whose? Whose job is it to step in?

Congress holds hearings and it’s all theatrical, 2016 gotcha tactics while the world burns in 2026. Yet no one with power steps up. Media, the people’s voice, is being taken over by monopolistic corporations. They decide what is reported and what is not based on what is good for the stockholders. The small town paper, the regional paper, even the “local” TV news all packaged the same, just a different regional flavor. Our voice is being lost.

We forget. We are not watching a reality show to which the consequences have no meaning. We are talking about how our representatives, and in turn us, are slapped in the face by the antics of a contemptuous Attorney General, FBI Director and Homeland Secretary. Whose every appearance demonstrate they answer to one person, and its not We, the People.

That same contempt comes from the Pentagon. As Pete Hegseth yells about the media reporting the casualty count It’s about optics. If the war is being played right in the media. It’s not about our family members who serve and how decisions are made with their lives in mind. The goal after one week is still not clear. Strategy is not clear. Logistics to resupply is being used as a bargaining chip. Perspective is lost.

There is too much to keep track of and worry about and I haven’t touched on tax proposals, the cost of living, and job losses.

Chaos has taken over the world and there isn’t another United States or Allied forces to stop it because the call is coming from inside the house. There are no more level headed strategic planners at the helm. It has been replaced by bravado, inexperience and cruelty.

The house is on fire, my fellow citizens, we can argue over who started it but first we need to put the fire out. But who do we turn to? The Fire Chief isn’t there to coordinate hose lines. The teacher who explained the purpose of the job has retired. The conductor with his pocket watch who once kept the trains running on time; all part of a bygone era. Accountability, integrity and ethics are all gone. We lack solid leadership with integrity.

We have forgotten ourselves in this game of gotcha politics and gaining control at all costs. Divided agendas that make one group suffer while another makes millions. Congress is all noise with little hope, just an irritating buzz. The positions are reduced to a hollow shells of what was once a powerful part of the three branches of government. What used to be the small part of the job, television interviews, is now what the job is all about.

I don’t know what to do. I have a life and a family as do you. I am not politicaian, barely a writer. I just know the chaos is real. There is so much to keep track in my own life but now I have this persistent need to keep one on eye on the news all the time. I am exhausted. Are you?
