Self care with a bathtub, lemon water, bath bombs, and an Australian Shepherd taking over the bath.

What Is Self-Care, Really?

Some say self-care is a hot bath with essential oils. Others claim it’s drinking lemon water before coffee, or finally going to that yoga class—even though your inner thighs have been conjoined twins since 2014.

I say self-care is hiding in your car in the driveway, finishing your drive-thru fries in blessed silence before going inside. It’s yelling “I’m in the bathroom!” when you’re not—just to buy yourself five minutes of peace. It’s buying the fancy hand soap because the cheap one made your hands smell like industrial sanitizer.

Self-care is not always pretty. Sometimes it’s saying “no” to one more school volunteer gig. Sometimes it’s staying in your pajamas all day—hair in a knot, ice cream stain on your shirt, and no intention of pretending otherwise.

But sometimes, if you’re lucky—or if you remember—you light a candle, put on music that makes you feel sixteen and invincible, and let the dishes wait.

Because self-care, when you get right down to it, is giving yourself permission to be human before you’re heroic.

  1. I find self-care difficult. I usually feel guilty about it. But you’re right, we are all human. Few of us are truly heroic, and no one can be heroic all the time!

    1. HI Signora Sheila. Welcome to Tidbits and Whatnots. I know self care is a hard one. I had a few people say it to me recently so I wanted to explore that topic this week. It is hard for me too.
